Amsterdam Travel Guide 2026: Canals, Museums & Getting There

Amsterdam is compact, walkable, and endlessly interesting — one of the world's most livable cities. Here's how to get there cheaply and how to spend your time like a local.

Amsterdam punches well above its size. With just 900,000 inhabitants, it has more museums per square kilometer than any other city, some of Europe's most stunning canal architecture, a cycling culture that reshapes how you think about urban movement, and a food scene that has quietly become one of the continent's best.

Flying to Amsterdam: Schiphol

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport (AMS) is one of Europe's best airports and a major hub for KLM and Delta. It's connected directly to Amsterdam Centraal Station by train (16 minutes, €5.80) and to Rotterdam, Den Haag, and Utrecht by intercity rail — making it a natural European hub for multi-city trips.

Schiphol handles flights from virtually every major European, North American, and Asian hub. Competition is intense, which keeps fares competitive. For budget travel, check Eindhoven Airport (EIN, 90 minutes south) for Ryanair routes that can be significantly cheaper.

When to Visit Amsterdam

  • April–May: Tulip season (Keukenhof garden), mild temperatures, long days. The most popular period — book at least 3 months ahead.
  • June–August: Warm (up to 25°C), lots of outdoor festivals, very crowded. Expensive.
  • September–October: Excellent. Temperature drops to 12–18°C, crowds thin, beautiful autumn light on the canals.
  • November–March: Cold and often rainy. But the museums are quieter, prices drop 30–40%, and Amsterdam's café culture (brown cafés, candlelit) is at its coziest.

What to See

Rijksmuseum

The Netherlands' national museum. Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals — some of the greatest paintings in Western art. Buy tickets in advance online; skip-the-line access is worth the slight premium. Allow 3–4 hours minimum.

Van Gogh Museum

The world's largest collection of Van Gogh's work. Chronologically arranged so you can see the evolution from dark Dutch Realism to Arles' explosion of color. Intensely moving. Book online weeks in advance in summer.

Anne Frank House

One of the most significant buildings in Europe. Tickets sell out months ahead for peak season — book the moment you know your travel dates. The experience is profound and unlike any other museum.

The Canal Ring

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rent a bike (€12–16/day) or walk the Jordaan neighborhood for the most beautiful stretch of 17th-century canal houses. Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht are the most atmospheric.

Amsterdam by Bike

You must cycle Amsterdam. The city has 500km of bike lanes. Rent from MacBike or Starbikes (€12–16/day). Rules: ride on the right, obey traffic signals, use bike lanes not car lanes, and be extremely careful at tram crossings. Amsterdammers cycle fast and don't always signal — learn to read their body language.

What to Eat and Drink

  • Stroopwafel: Caramel waffles — buy fresh at Albert Cuyp Market, not vacuum-packed at Schiphol.
  • Herring (haring): Raw herring with onions, eaten standing at a fish stall. Obligatory.
  • Rijsttafel: Indonesian rice table — a Dutch-Indonesian colonial legacy. A spread of 15–25 small dishes. Best at Tempo Doeloe in the canal district.
  • Jenever (Dutch gin): Traditional Dutch spirit, predates London gin. Drink it straight from the glass at a brown café (bruin café) — these centuries-old taverns are the soul of Amsterdam social life.

Practical Tips

  • Tourism tax: Amsterdam charges a city tax of €3 per person per night — added to hotel bills automatically.
  • Crowds: Many of Amsterdam's most famous streets are genuinely over-touristed in summer. The Jordaan and the Oud-Zuid neighborhood are quieter and more characterful alternatives.
  • The OV-chipkaart: The universal Dutch public transport card. Load credit at any station machine for metro, tram, bus, and intercity rail.
